dogzone; animal friend; backroom beefaroni; jellybean bird; kawaii egg; powerful magick; I like to live my life and eat a corn, nyo. thank you very much

i’ve also been thinking a lot about the social perception of ‘ethnic food’ (for lack of a better term)

there’s much greater fear of dirtiness and food contamination in immigrant restaurants (msg poisoning, anyone?), but at the same time, cheap and dirty are perceived as functions of authenticity in the US. the way class and race interact, basically. immigrants of color very rarely get the kind of prestige that white, well-educated chefs get. their cooking is thought of as inherent to their race instead of requiring the same training and talent white chefs do.

as an poc it’s really weird seeing food i’ve been eating my whole life become trendy amongst white people. especially when pretty mundane stuff is touted as the new miracle health food

maggotmaster:

we’ve had quinoa around here for a good while bc its a peruvian and bolivian product and though it wasn’t the most widely consumed thing and we don’t produce it ourselves it was fucked up seeing it get hella popular with dumbass yanks

western ‘alternative medicine’ is orientalist as fuck. not to say lots of their practices don’t originate from traditional chinese medicine, but the way it’s marketed is barely short of ANCIENT WISDOM FROM THE MYSTICAL EAST
